After Hours Initiative

After hours care – that is, care for people with an urgent health problem that cannot wait until regular services are available - is an important element of comprehensive primary health care. General practice has traditionally played a significant role in the provision of after hours primary care. However gaps remain in access to such care across Australia.

The Government’s 2010-11 federal budget announced funding to address these gaps through the provision of an After Hours Initiative comprising GP phone advice, regional coordination of face to face medical care and telemedicine.

Medicare Local After Hours (MLAF) Program
Under this Initiative, each Medicare Local has a mandate to improve access to effective after hours services. Medicare Locals have strong links to their local communities, health professionals, service providers and consumer and patient groups, enabling them to respond effectively to local needs for the provision of after hours care.

Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) has been funded by the Department of Health and Ageing to support the department to implement the MLAH Program.

For further information please contact Julie Porritt, Principal Network Adviser at AGPN on jporritt@agpn.com.au or by phone on 02 6228 0812.
