2010 Elections

On 04 November 2009, a new constitution was adopted by the Australian General Practice Network (AGPN). The new AGPN Board structure will have up to nine Directors as follows:

  •     six Elected Directors
    • at least three must be General Practitioners (Three GP Rule)
    • no more than two Elected Directors who carry on the majority of their General Practice, business or       employment in any one State or Territory (Location Rule)
  •    up to three Appointed Directors, appointed by the Elected Directors.

As part of the constitutional changes, Member Divisions will elect the six Elected Directors to the AGPN Board to serve from the 2010 AGPN Annual General Meeting (AGM). The terms of the new Elected Directors are as follows:

  •     two candidates receiving the first and second highest number of votes will retire at the end of the 2013 AGM
  •     two candidates receiving the third and fourth highest number of votes will retire at the end of the 2012 AGM
  •     two candidates receiving the fifth and sixth highest number of votes will retire at the end of the 2011 AGM.

In line with this, AGPN has commenced a process for the election of the Elected Directors to the AGPN Board. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has been contracted by AGPN to manage the 2010 AGPN Board elections including the nomination and ballot phases.

AEC’s role in the election is to undertake the mechanics of the process, including nomination process, preparation of the ballot material for distribution, the count and the declaration of result.

The various phases for the AGPN Board election are as follows:

  •     Call for nominations - Monday 05 July to Friday 30 July 2010
  •     Ballot papers drawn - Monday 02 August – ballot drawn (via lot)
  •     Postal Ballots – Thursday 05 August to Wednesday 08 September 2010
  •     Counting of votes – Thursday 09 September 2010
  •     Notification of results – Thursday 09 September 2010.

In accordance with this, the AEC has posted to all Member Divisions on Monday, 05 July 2010 the relevant documents for the call for nominations period of the election process.
